Fleeing impalas – captured

Lions are well known of their muscular strength of bringing down big prey such as buffalo, eland hippo, zebra, giraffe etc, but what our Head Guide Joseph at Selous Game Reserve witnessed this week by the river on the sand was fascinating.

It was a quiet sunny day for the impalas as they went down to the river to drink. Little did they know that a hungry and very determined lioness is guarding the river for her next meal.
The sequence of pictures taken by Joseph of the action as it unfolded, tells a vicious story of how far a hungry lion would go. Joseph watched as the big lioness sent the impalas flying, and she was struggling, skidding, taking sharp turns trying to catch the smallest baby impala. This is what happens if the pride did not kill something substantial, something big enough for the pride for a few days, they will individually start preying on small animals like scrub hares, rabbits, reptiles even on game birds.
